iPhone – Set up Contacts

You want to make sure set up your GMAIL account before you add your contacts and calendar to your IOS device.



STEP 1… add account to your Phone

Another option would be to use the CONTACTS Google SYNC APP in iTunes.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars. 
  3. Now select Add Account… under Accounts.
  4. Tap Other. 
  5. Choose Add CardDAV Account under Calendars.
  6. Fill in each FIELD…
    For the SERVER field, enter www.google.com
    Then your gmail account USER NAME [ie: jane@gmail.com]
    Then your gmail account PASSWORD
    Then put “google calendar” under DESCRIPTION
  7. Tap Next.


STEP 2… Sync your new acct with Google Acct

  1. Go to Google Sync using the BROWSER on your phone… m.google.com/sync/settings/
  2. Select your iPhone under Manage devices. (it should show all your devices)
  3. This should take you to your CALENDAR SETTINGS.
    Choose which calendars you want to sync to your phone.
  4. Tap Save and then close the Browser App.


  • Set Google contacts as your default account on your iOS device
  • If you have set up iCloud, are syncing contacts from another account, or already have contacts stored on the device, you will need to select a Default Account.

Set your default account

  1. Open the Settings app on your device.
  2. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars and scroll down to the Contacts section. You will only see the Default Account option if you’re syncing more than one account.
  3. Select Default Account.
  4. Select your Google contacts account.
  5. Your account will be labeled with the description you gave it in the Description field.

New and existing contacts

  • New contacts created directly on your iOS device will be added to your default account.
  • Existing contacts should be imported into Google contacts.
  • If your contacts are stored on an Apple device, you can transfer your contacts using vCard files. If your contacts are stored with another provider, first export your contacts and then import your contacts into Gmail.

Troubleshooting steps

If you have any problems, please try these things first:

  1. Open the CardDAV account you established at Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars under Accounts. Make sure Contacts is turned ON. (For iOS 6 and below, make sure that the Account option is turned ON.)
  2. If the Account is ON, then open Account > Advanced and make sure Use SSL is turned to ON. (For iOS 6 and below, open Advanced Settings and make sure Use SSL is turned to ON.)
  3. If you have changed anything, please click Done and the top right of the Account screen to save those changes.
  4. If you’re still experiencing issues syncing your contacts using CardDAV, ogin to your Google account on the web. You might be prompted to acknowledge an “Unusual sign-in location”.


You can import vCard files from applications like Outlook and Mac Address Book. To do so, follow these steps:

From Mac Address Book

  1. Go to File and choose Export
  2. Choose Export vCard.
  3. Sign in to Gmail.
  4. Click Gmail at the top-left corner of your Gmail page, then choose Contacts.
  5. Click the More actions dropdown menu and select Import….
  6. Click the Choose File button and locate the vCard file you’d like to upload.
  7. Select the file and click the Import button.

A few things to keep in mind:

The vCard files that these apps produce might not contain all of the supported contact fields. For example, when Outlook exports to a vCard file, it omits data, including attachments, distribution lists, the “file as” field, and text formatting in the “notes” field.

Because Google Contacts doesn’t have a way to know what data was omitted, we suggest that after you finish the import, you search for contacts that might have these properties and manually copy over any important information.

Also, Google Contacts doesn’t support contact attachments, distribution lists, rich text formatting in the “notes” field, and unlimited length for the “notes” field. When we are unable to import a certain field from the vCard, we do our best to let you know so that you can fix it manually.
